VLCC enquiries: turning a cargo headline into a workable vessel brief

A vessel class is a useful starting point for a crude enquiry, but it is not an acceptance decision. A workable brief connects the cargo, route and loading window with the actual vessel particulars and the terminals involved.

Build the brief before comparing ships

Our suggested enquiry checklist starts with grade, quantity and tolerance, load and discharge options, laycan, draft restrictions and required approvals. Ask the owner for current particulars and availability rather than assuming a previous position is still valid. Keep confirmed information separate from estimates.

Read inspection evidence in context

OCIMF describes SIRE as a tanker risk assessment tool. Inspection information belongs within a broader suitability review; it should not be presented as proof that a particular terminal or charterer will accept a ship. Our practical approach is to identify missing acceptance information before presenting a proposed pairing.
