Cargo gear: the segment's signature risk
Ship's cranes and derricks are the defining technical feature of multipurpose tonnage and the source of a disproportionate share of injuries, cargo damage and off-hire.
Management essentials:
- Statutory testing and certification of lifting appliances and loose gear, with the register maintained and available
- Wire rope inspection on a defined cycle, with condemnation criteria applied honestly
- Load-testing records retained and retrievable at inspection
- Competency — crane operation is a skill, not a rank entitlement

Cargo variety and the claims exposure
Multipurpose ships carry steel, timber, project cargo, containers, bagged goods, machinery and occasionally bulk — sometimes on the same voyage. Each has its own stowage, securing, ventilation and damage profile.

Mate's receipts and letters of protest are the segment's cheapest insurance. A clean receipt for pre-rusted steel is a claim waiting to happen, and the pressure to sign clean comes from the charterer, not the ship.
Ports and logistics
Small ports mean weak agency networks, unpredictable disbursements, limited repair capability and slow spares delivery. Practical countermeasures:
- Build a vetted agent list for repeat ports; do not accept nominations blindly
- Hold a wider critical spares inventory on board than a liner-trading ship would need
- Plan crew changes around ports with real air connectivity, not the nearest berth
